First Immigrants to America
The American branch of the Spafford/Spofford family has its roots in what is now Essex County, Massachusetts. While almost everyone with either of these two surnames and who can trace their ancestry back to an ancestor with a similar name who was living in North America during the nineteenth century is most likely descended from the original family immigrants,
there is presently at least one family in the United States descended from Robert S. Spafford who emigrated from Lincolnshire, England in 1849.
