Joan ---, his wife, whom he may have married about 1559, was buried in Rattlesden 15 May 1615, "an old woman."

Henry Scott = Martha Whatlock

Henry Scott, a son of Edmund Scott and his wife Joan ---, was baptized at Bradsfield, St. George, Suffolk County, England on 1 November 1560. He married Martha Whatlock in Rattlesden, Suffolk County, on 25 July 1594. He was buried at Rattlesden on 24 December 1624 and had left a will.

Martha Whatlock was the daughter of Thomas Whatlock and his wife Joan (---). She was baptized in Rattlesden on 15 July 1568. Ten years after her husband's death she set sail for America with her son, Thomas Scott, her daughter Ursula (Scott) Kemball, their spouses, and ten grandchildren from the ages of one to eighteen. This family group embarked on the "Elizabeth" of Ipswich the last of April 1634, taking the oath of allegiance at the customs house before sailing. Martha Scott's age is given on the list as 60, although she was actually 66. The families soon settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, after a short stay for the Scotts in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and for the Kemballs in Watertown, Massachusetts. Martha Scott presumably died at Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Children baptized at Rattlesden:

Thomas baptized 26 February 1594/5. He married 20 July 1620 Elizabeth Strutt, and migrated to America in 1634. Their descent is continued.

Ursula baptized 14 February 1596/7, married in 1613 Richard Kemball. She died 1 March 1660 at Ipswich, MA.

Roger baptized 5 November 1604, married 26 February 1627/8 to Sarah Grimwood. He was buried 17 August 1676.

The surname Scot or Scott was well established in East Anglia at an early date. There were, for example 35 persons called Scot in the Suffolk subsidy rolls for 1327, and in the Suffolk returns of 1523 there are at least 16 Scots. The surname may indicate Scots descent, or it may be a nickname. (Reference 2)

Thomas Scott is alegedly descended from Charlemagne, c. 740. See separate lineage of Scott Family in files. (This is questionable according to Pillsbury references.)

Thomas Scott had a sister, Ursula, who married a Richard Kimball, founder of the Kimball line in America.

Spafford Genealogy [1, p 37 mentions an Isaac Mixer, age 4, arriving with the Scottts from England. This could have been another child, or someone else.

! "The Pioneers of Massachusetts"P404 gives arrival date on 30 Apr 1635.

They came from Ipswich,England on the ship "Elizabeth of Ipswich" on 30 Apr

Thomas Scott = Elizabeth Strutt

Thomas Scott, the son of Henry Scott and his wife Martha Whatlock, was baptized on 26 February 1594/5 in Rattlesden, Suffolk County, England. On 20 July 1620 he married in Rattlesden Elizabeth Strutt. This family came to America in 1634 and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Thomas Scott's will was dated 8 March 1653/4 and was probated 28 March 1654, a few days later. This will gives 25 pounds to each of his daughters: Elizabeth, Abigail, Hannah, Sarah and Mary. The two eldest were to be paid with the year, the younger to be paid at age twenty-one or half the sum sooner at marriage.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Christopher Strutt and Anne Waller. She was baptized 16 May 1594 in Rattlesden. She came to America with her husband in 1634, but died before his will was made in 1654.

Her mother, Anne Waller, was the daughter of John Waller and his wife Joan ---. She was baptized 8 February 1561/2 in Rattlesden, married there 14 July 1590 to Christopher Strutt. She was buried 22 July 1611, he was buried 16 February 1627/8.

Children:

Elizabeth baptized 18 November 1623 in Rattlesden, died 10 February 1691. She married John Spofford of Rowley, Mass.

Abigail baptized 5 March 1625 in Rattlesden, died after 1683. She married Hanniel Bosworth of Ipswich, Mass.

Thomas baptized 15 June 1628 in Rattlesden, died 6 September 1657 at Ipswich, Mass. He married Margaret Hubbard, sister of Rev. William Hubbard.

Benjamin baptized 3 February 1630, buried there 30 August 1633.

Hannah born about 1635-6 after the family arrived in America. After her father's death she apparently came to Stamford to be a ward of her brother. She married 7 January 1655/6 Edmund Lockwood at Stamford, Ct. She died 12 April 1706 at Stamford. The descent of this couple is continued.

Sarah born about 1637-8, living in 1661 when Ezekiel Rogers receipted for her share of her father's estate.

Mary born about 1639-40, died 26 September 1728. She married Thomas Patch of Wenham, son of Nicholas Patch and his wife Elizabeth Owsley.

Fourth Generation

6. Elizabeth Scott. Born 1625 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, Eng.. Christen Nov 18, 1623 in Rattlesden, Suffolk, Eng.. Died Feb 10, 1690/1691 in Bradford, MA.

Pillsbury [2] shows baptism as 18 Nov. 1623, in which case, birthdate of Elizabeth is questionable. Spafford Genealogy [1, p 37] indicates that Elizabeth was 9 years old when she came to America in 1634, which would make her birthdate about 1625. She married John Spofford, son of John Spofford & ?, Before 1647 in Rowley, MA. Born 1612 in Yorkshire, England. Died About Nov 1, 1678 in Rowley, MA (?). Buried in Rowley, Mass..

This was the Father of the first generation of Spofford/Spafford in America. He came to America in 1638 and settled between Ipswich and Newbury, Mass. in April 1639. His will was made 8 October 1678 and probated (proved) 6 November 1678 (see Essex Deeds, 4 Ips.:222), obviously his death was sometime between these two dates. Record of marriage to Elizabeth Scott probably destroyed when the house of Rev. Ezekiel Rogers burned in Rowley, Mass. John is undoubtedly buried in Rowley, Mass, but there is no gravestone marker.
