1888 SPOFFORD/SPAFFORD REUNION

The Haverhill, Massachusetts "DAILY EVENING BULLETIN", dated August 30, 1888, reported on the activities of the SPOFFORD/SPAFFORD Family Reunion held at Georgetown Aug. 29th and 30th, celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the arrival of John Spofford from Yorkshire. It was upon this occasion that the 1888 Genealogy by Jeremiah Spofford was distributed. The "Newburyport Daily Herald," dated August 30, 1888, also covered the event, but not as extensively as the Evening Bulletin. Both newspapers include a listing of those in attendance at the reunion, numbering several hundred persons. While I suspect that neither of the listings are 100% complete, the Evening Bulletin's list definitely is the longer of the two.

I have scanned the list of those shown as being present from the "DAILY EVENING BULLETIN" into two separate GIF files -- Present1.gif and Present2.gif. (Sorry, but graphic files are the only practical way of getting these lists into the computer -- my OCR software just won't begin to do the job.) The names are listed in two 'traditional' newspaper columns, with Present1 covering the top half of the page while Present2 covers the bottom half. There is some duplication of names where the two files overlap in the middle of the page, and I have 'retyped' a few names near the middle of Present1 that were otherwise unreadable due to damage to the original at that point.

To make these files more manageable on-line, I have provided two separate links for you to view them individually. You are encouraged to download these two files and print them in order to examine the names at your leisure.

In addition to the above newspapers, I have in my collection of family 'memorabilia,' a copy of the Invitation, including a proposed program of activities, that was sent to many families on July 16, 1888. You might get a chuckle, or two, over the then current train fares. The original is a single 8.5" x 11" sheet, printed on both sides, with a single fold. Again there are two GIF files involved, one for the cover and the other the inside. You may wish to download these two files and print them out in order to get the full effect. (Since the 'back' of the invitation is blank, you must scroll to the right as the cover file is loading in order to see the image.)
