The following references have proved to be invaluable in researching the SPOFFORD/SPAFFORD Family:

  1. "A GENEALOGICAL RECORD, INCLUDING TWO GENERATIONS IN FEMALE LINES OF FAMILIES SPELLING THEIR NAME SPOFFORD, SPAFFORD, SPAFARD, AND SPAFORD, DESCENDANTS OF JOHN SPOFFORD AND ELIZABETH SCOTT", By Dr. Jeremiah Spofford, Alfred Mudge & Son, Boston, 1888. (This is currently the most definitive published reference covering the genealogy of the American Branch of the family from the earliest ancestors in 965 through the 1880's. It is available in many public libraries. It was published on the occasion of the 1888 Family Reunion held in Rowley/Georgetown, Essex County, Massachusetts. )
  2. "GENEALOGICAL ACCOUNT OF THE SPOFFORTH OR SPOFFORD FAMILY.", by Ashworth P. Burke, Harrison and Sons, London, 1897. (Contains a brief history of the family's English roots in Yorkshire and some information on both the English and American branches through 1896. An Appendix of extracts from the Domesday Book, lists land confiscated from early family ancestors by William the Conqueror.)
  3. "NIDDERDALE, From Nun Monkton to Whernside", by Harry Speight, Elliot Stock, London, 1906. (Described as 'A Record of the History, Antiquities, scenery, Old Homes, Families, etc. of the beautiful valley of the Nidd' River in Yorkshire. Contains an interesting map of the area, a chapter on Spofforth, as well as a pedigree chart of some of the SPOFFORTH/SPOFFORD family. There are several illustrations, including one depicting the ruins of 'Spofforth' castle as they appeared in 1905. Interesting reading.)
  4. "NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER", vol 8, pp. 335-344 and vol 9, pp. 61-67, 273-278. Notes on some descendants of John Spofford and Elizabeth Scott for those who don't have access to Dr. Jeremiah's 1888 genealogy (# 1 above).
