Any Way You Slice It, Sun's PizzaTool Is Food For Thought

	No doubt bowing to pressure from some of its academic users, Sun
Microsystems has made available the PizzaTool, a network pizza-creation
utility for NeWS.
	And in yet another advancement for the free exchange of software,
Sun is offering PizzaTool source without charge.
	Officials at Sun are touting the new utility as a productivity
tool, designed to ease programmer stress while provididng a robust, if
somewhat greasy, source of nutrition during late-night work sessions.
	Users of the new PizzaTool can select from a variety of toppings
that can be dragged onto a blank pizza screen.
	The pizza, a PostScript image in a NeWS window, can be previewed
and spun, causing the toppings to blur into that just-cooked look.
	From there, the order can be faxed to your local pizza parlor for
delivery or, if you've got the necessary hardware, processed on the spot
by your very own pizza server.
	PizzaTool developer Don Hopkins from Sun's TNT group (that's The
NeWS Toolkit grouip) said the PizzaTool is nothing more than a PostScript
file with an attached manual page, which can run on any Sun platform loaded
with Open Windows 2.0 and the latest NeWS toolkit, which was released late
last month.
	Hopkins said PizzaTool wasn't really designed as a product but as
a demonstration of what TNT can do.
	The PizzaTool demonstrates various aspects of TNT operation,
including "drag-and-drop," for draggin toppings onto your pizza; rotation
of a PostScript object, for previewing the final cooked pizza; and pop-up
menus, for showing a list of possible ingredients and their prices.
	He said the PizzaTool even has a built-in cost-cutting feature
that allows it to chec prices of the toppings you have selected, and try
to build a cheaper pizza using a price list from your local pizza parlor.
In its current incarnation, the PizzaTool will take an order and send it
via E-mail to an address on the Pizza Server. At Sun, the server then sends
a fax order to Tony and Alba's pizza place in Mountain View.
	But Hopkins, who reportedly spend several hours examining different
pizzas at Tony and Alba's to give the PizzaTool the correct look-and-feel,
said the back-end pizza processing is entirely up to the user.
	Hopkins said he ahs already been asked to consider creating a
SushiTool for West Coast Sun users, an extension he said may take on greater
importance as Sun moves into the Japanese market. ANd while he acknowledges
a DeliTool might be welcome on the East Coast, he adds that the greatest
challenge for hist take-out toolkit may come from the U.K., where warm
beer is the rage.

KGB SAYS ITS WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

A leading U.S. advertising agency, BBDO Worldwide, and Vneshtorgizdat, a
Soviet state-owned publisher, have approached the Soviet secret police with a
proposal for a campaign to spruce up its image, to "dissociate itself" from
its "history of repression and lawlessness."  A KGB spokesman told a
reporter, "We tend to think that the best advertisement (for our image) is
our own work."

JUST CAN'T STOP MYSELF

The high court of Hong Kong awarded Lee Wun, 69, more than $100,000 in
January after he suffered brain damage from being hit by a truck.  He has
experienced an uncontrollable urge to turn on faucets, and part of the award
was to cover his mounting water bills.

Los Angeles glass salesman Richard Joseph Angona, 39, was arrested in January
for felony vandalism after a five-month BB-gun spree caused $180,000 in
damages.   Police say Angona shot out at least 32 store windows but believe
the motive was not to sell glass.  The deputy prosecutor said he thought
Angona just liked to watch glass shatter.

Baton Rouge police sought Thomas J. Hoffmann, 35, last summer after accusing
him of mail-ordering $200,000 worth of merchandise using five post office
boxes and 227 aliases - and discarding the bills.  He allegedly received up
to 50 packages a day, and police removed enough goods from his house and from
two storage rooms to fill an 8,000-square-foot postal service warehouse.

James Clark, 50, was arrested in September in Columbus, Ohio, for breaking
into telephones in at least 32 states and stealing about $1 million in dimes
and quarters.  Clark's secret weapons were a lock pick made of piano wire and
a device to measure how full a coin box was so that he would not be wasting
his time with small change.  Other states were lining up to indict him as
well.

Todd Christopher Tassin was arrested in July in LaPlace, La., and charged with
his eighth burglary of Keating's Grocery in four weeks.

1990 ELECTION RECAP

Voters in Washington, D.C., selected as non-voting delegate to Congress a
woman who admitted not filing local tax returns for the past seven years, and
33,000 Minnesotans voted, for state treasurer, for a man in jail on primary
day awaiting trial for first-degree murder (and whose address in the Voter's
Guide was the address of the county jail).

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch identified 27 dead people who have voted in
various elections since 1981 in East St. Louis, Ill., through last fall's
primary.  Two men joined the democratic process only upon death, having never
cast votes while alive.  Willie E. Fox Sr., who has voted six times since his
death in 1987, mysteriously switched this year from Republican to Democrat.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court in December upheld the landslide victory by
incumbent Frank Ogden III (91 percent) over Josh Evans.  Evans had run on a
campaign of being an "able lawyer and a living person," which he though gave
him an advantage over Ogden, who had died three months before the election.

An Austin, Texas, grand jury indicted Michael Taylor, 25, last May for
registering to vote 37 times under 37 different names of dead people.  Taylor
denied bad motives: "I wasn't going to use it for voting.  It was just to be
doing something.  I had some problems in my life."  (Indeed, none of the 37
had voted in the March 1990 primary.)

Ballots for a city council election in Redfield, Ark., were printed with no
names because the filing deadline completely slipped the minds of each of the
six council members and their challengers.

Cliessa Nagle, running for the Pennsylvania Assembly, was attacked by her
father in a vitriolic seven-page letter to local newspapers.  James Nagle
urged rejection of his daughter because of her pro-choice stand on abortion.
He said he still loves her, but she characterized the relationship as
"dysfunctional."

I think the really interesting information is left out.  Just *why* is it
that the odds of winning the California lottery are 14 times greater than
being struck by lightning (I presume in California), but that the odds of
winning the California lottery are only four times greater than being
struck by lightning in Connecticut?  I mean, are we talking about the
population in general, or just California lottery ticket holders?  If
I don't buy a California lottery ticket, am I safe from lightning?  If I
*don't* buy a California lottery ticket, and am in California, am I
courting death?  What if I do or don't buy a California lottery ticket
and remain in Illinois?  What if I visit South Dakota?  Do Illinois
lottery tickets provide any lightening protection?  Do they have to be
"current"?
