Police to prosecute about 150 persons over genitals scare

LAGOS, Nov 5 (AFP) - About 150 persons are to face breach of the peace
charges following a scare here over alleged "disappearing genitals", police
spokesman George Ogar said.
Some could also face charges of supplying police with false information, he
told national television NTA late Sunday.
The Nigerian capital and neighbouring states of Oyo and Ogun have been
shaken by a bizarre rumour of genitals disappearing after a handshake or body
contact with strangers.
The allegation led to dozens of suspects in Lagos metropolis being
beaten up.
Medical tests on people who claimed they had been victims disproved the
allegations, Mr. Ogar said.
But the rumour forced the police to clamp a dusk to dawn ban on movement
along Ikoyi road, close to the residence and headquarters of President Ibrahim
Babangida.
Information Minister Alex Akinyele said the government could not allow any
kind of "panic and commotion" on the two-kilometre stretch of road which
separates President Babangida's offices and residence from official Radio
Nigeria, where government troops and dissidents fought during an abortive coup
on April 22.
