Course Description

This course is intended as a a basic introduction to computer security and basic cryptography topics. Some network security topics may also be presented, time permitting. It is an intro course to basic concepts in information security and management. It is not an in-depth course in cryptographic techniques or algorithms, secure system design, or other topics.

Catalog description: This course is a survey of fundamentals of information security. Included are coverage of risks and vulnerabilities, policy formation, controls and protection methods, database security, encryption, authentication technologies, host-based and network-based security issues, personnel and physical security issues, and basic issues of law and privacy.

Course Policies

All of my courses operate under the same general policies and standards. My students are expected to study and understand these policies. Potential students are encouraged to check these out before signing up for one of my classes.

Scheduling

Spring 2005. T Tr 12:00-1:15

Two midterms and a final exam will be given. Dates for these are shown on the class schedule.

THe final exam will be held May 6th from 3:20pm to 5:20pm in rooms ME 116 and ME 117.

There is a PSO section scheduled to go with the course.

Grades

The final grade in this course will be based on exams, projects, and homework. The approximate weight of these components is given below. I may adjust these percentages slightly is class performance and workload indicate.

I do not plan to curve exam scores or project scores, but I may apply a small adjustment to the final grades, if warranted.

Midterms (2) 35%
Final exam 35%

Homeworks 10%

Texts & Readings

The textbook for the class will be Security in Computing (3rd edition) by Charles P. Pfleeger and Shari Lawrence Pfleeger; Prentice Hall; 2002.

I have a list of other recommended texts that will be augmented as the semester progresses. You can consult these texts if you need additional instructional material, or if you are generally interested in the topic area.
